A CYCLONE INDUCED STORM SURGE FORECASTING MODEL FOR THE COAST OF BANGLADESH WITH APPLICATION TO THE CYCLONE `SIDR'
Authors
Abstract:
The coast of Bangladesh has a specialty in terms of high bending and many off- shore islands. Incorporation of the coastline and island boundaries properly in the numerical scheme is essential for accurate estimation of water levels due to surge. For that purpose a numerical scheme consisting of very fine mesh is required along the coastal belt, whereas this is unnecessary away from the coast. In this study, a fine mesh scheme covering the coastal belt and islands has been nested into a coarse mesh scheme covering up to 15 N latitude in the Bay of Bengal. For the existence of so many small and big islands and also for high bending of the coastline along the Meghna estuary, a very fine mesh scheme for the region between Barisal and Chittagong is again nested into the fine mesh scheme. A vertically integrated model is developed in Cartesian coordinate system to solve the shallow water equations using semi- implicit finite difference technique for computing surge associated with storms. The developedsystem is applied on a severe cyclonic storm ’SIDR’ that hit Bangladesh on 15th November, 2007. The computed water levels are found to be in good agreement with those observed.

full textA BOUNDARY-FITTED SHALLOW WATER MODEL OF SIMULATE TIDE AND SURGE FOR THE HEAD BAY OF BENGAL – APPLICATION TO CYCLONE SIDR (2007) AND AILA (2009)
Severe Tropical Cyclones associated with surges frequently hits the coastal region of Bangladesh. For a reliable hydrodynamic model to simulate the severity of such cyclones, it is necessary to incorporate the meteorological and hydrological inputs properly. In order to incorporate the coastlines and the island boundaries properly in the numerical scheme a very fine grid resolution along the co...
full textTropical Cyclone Flooding: Not Just a Coastal Storm-Surge Phenomenon
Inland riverine flooding from tropical cyclones (TCs) is responsible for significant economic losses in the United States. Yet, most hurricane loss assessment efforts are focused on coastal areas. Hurricane Irene, which struck the U.S. east coast in 2011, provides a recent and poignant example: while intense media coverage and preparation and evacuation activities focused on the projected coast...
full textConsideration of Applicability of Stochastic Tropical Cyclone Model for Probability Assessment of Storm Surge
Storm surge risk is basic and important information for design of coastal structure, but its probability assessment is difficult because the frequency of devastating TC is not so high. Furthermore, storm surge damage is very sensitive to not only its intensity but also its track and translation speed. Therefore, the estimation of occurrence probability of devastating disaster from our limited o...
full textinvestigating the feasibility of a proposed model for geometric design of deployable arch structures
deployable scissor type structures are composed of the so-called scissor-like elements (sles), which are connected to each other at an intermediate point through a pivotal connection and allow them to be folded into a compact bundle for storage or transport. several sles are connected to each other in order to form units with regular polygonal plan views. the sides and radii of the polygons are...
Delft University of Technology Compound simulation of fluvial floods and storm surges in a global coupled river- coast flood model Model development and its application to 2007 Cyclone Sidr in Bangladesh
Water-related disasters, such as fluvial floods and cyclonic storm surges, are a major concern in the world’s mega-delta regions. Furthermore, the simultaneous occurrence of extreme discharges from rivers and storm surges could exacerbate flood risk, compared to when they occur separately. Hence, it is of great importance to assess the compound risks of fluvial and coastal floods at a large sca...
